Multitrack Recording in Audition CC

You get a track, you get a track, everybody gets a track!

The Rodecaster Pro is capable of pushing through a 14-track feed to Audition CC. If you are planning to use more than one microphone for your production, or overlay Zoom audio, phone audio or other soundbites, multitrack recordings makes editing a lot easier. However, multitrack recording can be a bit daunting for first timers, so let's go through how to set one up.

Before you begin

Make sure the levels of the microphones on the Rodecaster Pro unit are constant between your participants. If someone has a louder, or quieter voice, level them off to make sure you have a balanced recording (NB: you can do this in post-production but you run into the possibility of clipping).

Audition Setup

Open Audition and create a new multitrack recording by hitting the 'Multitrack' button on the top-left hand side of the window. Make sure the bit depth is set to 32-bit, and the sample rate to 48000Hz. Select a location for your project and files, make sure it is easily accessible so you can move your files later.

Getting ready to record

You'll now need to set up the channels for each of the tracks. By default, you'll get six tracks to work with. If this isn't enough, you can add tracks by clicking 'Multitrack' in the menu bar and heading to Tracks and adding the track you need. As a rule, microphones should be mono tracks, while most other inputs are stereo.

To assign a channel to a track, click the dropdown 'Default Stereo Input' and select your input from either 'Mono' or 'Stereo'. Do this for all your tracks. All microphone inputs should be selected from the mono menu.

If you hit record, you'll find that you won't record anything yet. We need to first hit the 'Arm For Record' button on each of our tracks.

Change your inputs and hit the 'R' to arm the track.

You should now be able to record your production in multitrack format. Edit to your liking and then mixdown the recording to stereo for distribution. Or move it into Premiere to edit with video.
